I became an architect by way of traditional apprenticeship in the successor firm to the practice of Frank Lloyd Wright. After graduating with a BA in Art and English, I spent the next five years in Wright’s Taliesin Fellowship wherein I learned the value of maintaining a beautiful environment in which to live and work and first came to understand the essential importance of cultivating and sustaining an effective working relationship with one’s clients.
That experience and a wellspring of relationships with scores of clients over three decades of professional practice inspired the writing of my first book: How to Work with an Architect.
Pursuing my interest in historic preservation, I stumbled upon the downtrodden Pittsburgh mill neighborhood of South Side in 1986 where I made my home and later established my practice.
My grassroots involvements to effect the revitalization of this neighborhood have informed both my professional practice and my not-for-profit charitable involvements.
My firm is nationally recognized for the craft and beauty of our award-winning custom residential designs, our work on historic structures, and in the preservation-based revitalization of urban neighborhoods and traditional downtown business districts. We integrate the knowledge gained through our experiences with older structures into our new work - building better buildings based upon an understanding of the successes and failures of buildings of the past. Environmental sustainability and energy conservation have always been essential parts of our design philosophy.
In all our work, we endeavor to distinguish the curious from the beautiful--- At their essence, the best homes, conceived out of those special relationships in which owner and architect are in concert, afford a sense of sanctuary within a circumstance of beauty and become a grace upon the landscape.
We welcome opportunities where the benefit of our experience can contribute real and lasting value.
